Long Term Care Simplified

By Terry Stanfield

What is Long-Term Care? When people consider the subject of long-term care, they often think about nursing homes. In fact, long-term care has little to do with nursing homes. Understanding the difference can help you protect your family and finances.

The Consequences of Living Longer

Long-term care is a continuum of care services and housing that you will need later in life. Think you won't live a long life? Think back 25 years ago. If you had cancer or a stroke, you simply died. Few ever heard of Alzheimer's. Today, it is the leading cause for long-term care services. The longer you live, the more likely you are to need care. The question is not who will take care of you, because your family will most often, but rather what will that care do to your family and finances.

Long-Term Care is Usually Custodial Care

Long-term care is defined as needing assistance with your activities of daily living (toileting, bathing, dressing, eating, transferring from one point to another, and continence). It also includes cognitive impairment so severe that the individual needs constant supervision. If you need custodial care, chances are it will be delivered in the community, not in a nursing home. Many of you have heard compelling statistics from The New England Journal of Medicine stating that 43% of those over age 65 will need nursing home care. What the article actually said is that that number may spend some time in a facility. The fact is, few end their days in one. Every study conducted finds that care is overwhelmingly provided at home. The key question, of course, is who is going to pay for it? Who Covers the Cost?

Medicare & VA

Medicare, the primary health care program for retirees pays only for skilled or rehabilitative care, not custodial care in any venue. Medicaid, a federal and state program for financially needy individuals will pay for custodial care, but primarily in nursing homes. Funding for home care and assisted living is very limited and based on availability of funds. Veterans believe that the VA will pay for home care, adult day care, or assisted living. As with Medicaid, funding is limited and generally based on service-related disability. In fact, the federal government has as much said this to veterans by encouraging them to purchase long-term care insurance through the new Federal Long-Term Care Insurance program. The result is that consumers are forced to pay privately for their care. Unfortunately, the best thought-out retirement plan rarely takes into consideration living a long life. Put another way, those assets and income have been allocated to pay for retirement, not for the consequences of living a long life. This results in the need to invade principal and divert income. As a result, one of a seniors' greatest fear, outliving their assets, literally may come true.

The Role of Long-Term Care Insurance

The use of long-term care insurance thus becomes an important part of planning for disability caused by living a long life. The product has two roles: helping keep families together and allowing your retirement portfolio to execute for the purpose for which it was intended, namely retirement. From a family perspective, who will provide your care? Like it or not, children will play a key role. Long-term care insurance (LTCI) doesn't replace the need for family involvement in providing care but rather builds on it. It pays professionals to assist the person with the toughest tasks such as toileting, bathing, feeding and continence. This, in turn, allows the family to provide care better and longer at home. That leads to a critical question: have YOU planned for the consequences of living a long life? From a financial point of view, LTCI allows your retirement plan to stay intact. That is particularly important given the recent steep decline in portfolio value. The product, in effect, protects the balance of your account value. LTCI also protects income. Although you may qualify for Medicaid to pay for nursing home costs by transferring assets, your income (pension, social security, IRA and or 401k payout) cannot be protected. When buying this insurance, look for a long-term care specialist. Consider their training, educational credentials, and commitment to help solve your long-term care needs. The key is whether they talk first about a plan or a product. If they are interested in the plan, you are dealing with a professional. If they focus first on product and price, consider getting another opinion.

The Hardest Cosmetic Surgery Choice

By J Miller

The most serious decision you may have to make after you've decided to have plastic surgery is who your doctor may be. You may want to initially do some research online, looking up each cosmetic surgeon and checking out his or her website. You may need to secretly research your doctor by thinking about creative ways to learn more about him or her. You'll probably want to make sure each doctor you are thinking about is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. You'll also want to confirm that your plastic surgeon belongs to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons or the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

After this first phase of research you'll have a list of five or six plastic surgeons who can perform the procedures you want. Contact the offices of each plastic surgeon and set up an initial consultation. Most doctors do not charge for this visit. In busy surgeon's offices it can take a couple months to actually get an initial appointment, but don't be discouraged.

At each meeting with your prospective plastic surgeon ask plenty of questions and take notes not only on what is said but also on how he or she relates to you. Remember: your relationship with your plastic surgeon will be more than just the normal relationship between a doctor and a patient. Your plastic surgeon will be responsible for improving your body permanently, so having a healthy relationship built on clear understanding is necessary.

After research you should probably have your choice between one or two plastic surgeons. Now you can think about what hospital your surgeon will use, financing options and ultimately which cosmetic surgeon you felt most comfortable with.

It's not always simple to choose the cosmetic surgeon who is going to improve your body and your life. If you still can't decide between one or two cosmetic surgeons you will probably want to begin listing the pros and cons of each and talking about them with friends that you trust. Often the people closest to you can offer you advice on major decisions like choosing a plastic surgeon. Once you've made your decision and have scheduled the surgery you can sit back and relax, knowing that you've made the correct choice by choosing the best cosmetic surgeon that fits your needs and wants!

New Born Babies Home Tips

By Amanda Gamdana

Your newborn goes through a lot right after he's born. Whether the birth was natural or assisted, he or she experiences a great deal of stress as he copes with the abrupt change in the world as he knows it. His new circumstances therefore confound him in the first few weeks. Everything goes haywire when the baby comes home. Unless you lose your cool the transition will not be difficult with the given tips.

Your baby listens to your voice right from the time he is in the womb. The sound of your voice enables him to cross the hurdles of life easily, from the time of his birth. Being familiar with your voice he will be able to focus on what you are trying to communicate.

Look at him while you talk so that he is attentive even though he cannot see you that clearly yet. Both you and your newborn have to learn how to best communicate with each other.

Just stroking the arms, legs, back and head will create a marked difference in your bonding with him. Regularly massaging your newborn will give you the opportunity to have a prolonged physical contact with him. One cannot deny the benefits of infant massage.

When you hold your baby, he not only feels comfortable but also secure. This keeps him happy. Besides, he senses the familiar heart beats which help him to relax. Along with your baby even you feel relaxed when you both maintain physical contact.

Though it may disturb you, crying is the only way he can draw your attention to his needs. So he uses it to express hunger, pain, discomfort or even a bad mood. Then you try to find out why he's uncomfortable. Gradually you will be able to recognize his cry for hunger, cry of pain etc.

Do not think you are spoiling him. This will grow with your paying constant attention to him. It takes some time for new moms to get used to their babies at first. But communicating your love to him through all his senses goes a long way toward calming those delicate newborn nerves.

Could Chronic Fatigue Syndrome be linked to the stress response?

By Russell Stubbs

How does ME/CFS start?

There are a number of different factors in the development of Fatigue related conditions. Viruses, bacterial infections, operations, vaccinations, etc. can all be triggers. This can lead to the development of Post Viral Fatigue Syndrome (PVFS), Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) and Fibromyalgia (FM). The cause can also be attributed to a stressful incident or time in a persons life. The common factor in all of theses cases is that the sufferer's system is under stress.

What happens when we are under stress?

We produce a powerful cocktail of chemicals - including cortisol, adrenalin and noradrenalin as a result of entering this state. This is the same chemistry produced during the fight or flight response - a natural process that is triggered in reaction to a perceived or real threat.

Many physiological changes occur during fight or flight

The sympathetic nervous system is responsible for a number of changes taking place. Heart rate and blood pressure increase in order to supply additional fuel to the major muscles. Blood sugar and thyroid levels are affected. Nonessential functions including digestion and immune system shut down allowing more energy for emergency systems.

Where's the connection between the stress response and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?

The initial virus, bug, trauma, vaccination etc. has already under put the system under stress. If there were other stressors present or the person was run-down at the time, the recovery period could be prolonged. If the recovery is slow this can be a cause for concern, which results in more stress. The immune system, which is already challenged becomes depleted, further slowing the process of recovery.

Sufferers Search for Help

Sufferers typically seek help from their doctors who run tests for other ailments. The test results are negative but the symptoms persist. Sufferers often try alternative approaches. Sometimes these give temporary relief, but once again the symptoms return. People can easily lose trust in their body and energy levels. This further entrenches the stress - symptom - stress pattern.

Stress response over the long-term

When subjected to the stress response over the long-term the system becomes depleted. The chemistry that we produce in order to help us out of danger becomes toxic, depleting the immune system and disrupting most other bodily systems. Prolonged activation can cause adrenalin levels to become depleted. This dysregulation of stress chemistry causes more fatigue and physical symptoms.

Can it be all in the mind?

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is clearly not all in the mind. It's an illness that is very physical in nature. It is known to affect most bodily systems. Approaches to recovery that are purely physical or that focus only on specific symptoms rarely work well. What's needed is an understanding of the mechanisms that trigger these physiological responses. We need to recognize that these mechanisms are very much a part of the mind. Until these patterns are addressed, full recovery over the long term is unlikely.

How can these cycles be broken?

Given the right tools it is possible to break free of these cycles relatively quickly. Recovery time, fortunately, is not relative to the duration of the illness. What's needed is an insight into the damaging unconscious cycles, along with an understanding of the mind - body connection. New physical and cognitive strategies can then be introduced in order to influence the health in a positive way.

You are not broken!

Sufferers of fatigue related conditions can typically feel broken or flawed in some way. Although the physical symptoms can be so severe that it feels as if this is so, this is not the case. Human health is incredibly buoyant, it is just necessary to discover what is in the way. Once we can bring balance to the system, we can create the opportunity for energy to return and physical symptoms to naturally resolve.

What is a Mole

By Peter Petigrew

There is a mole on everyone somewhere. You may be asking, What is a mole? Well, a mole is a collection of cells called melanocyte. These cells give skin its color. If there is just one mole it is called a nevus, if there is more than one it is called a nevi. Most people are born with their moles. Ths sun just gives them color.

Moles come in a variety of sizes, colors and shapes. Most moles are brown or black, but they can be blue, translucent, red or flesh toned. Some moles are flat to the skin and others form a bulb of flesh on the surface of the skin. Most of the time, moles appear in the first twenty to thirty years of life. Your age, race, and genetics are all factors in the amount of moles and types of moles that you have. Environment also plays a factor in the development of the mole. Sun exposure is one environmental factor that plays a role in the development of moles.

A junctional nevus grows from cells in the epidermis, the outer layers of skin. This type of mole is flat and appears blackish brown. An intradermal nevus stays in the dermis, inner layer of skin. This mole is a variety of colors from brown to flesh tone. They are soft and raised. Compound nevi are mixtures of the two areas of skin and fit right in the middle. They're height is more than a junctional and less than an intradermal.

The next type of mole gives a lot of people the most scare. It is the blue nevus. The blue nevus is blue-black in color and may people often mistake it for skin cancer.

The final way to identify moles are by regularities. They do not resemble symmetrical moles and are called dysplastic moles or atypical moles. They can sometimes be cancerous and resemble melanoma. The mnemonic device ABCDs can be used to identify these irreuglarities. A is for asymmetry when one side isn't the same as the other. B is for irregular borders they are uneven. C is for color and they don't have the same color throughout. Finally, D is for diameter when one is bigger than most at 6mm.

Make sure you check your mole if it is bleeding or you see differences in an old mole you need to go to your doctor. If you catch melanoma when you first find it is easier to cure. Just be aware of any irregularities of your mole.

Things To Consider Before Opting For A Drug Rehabilitation Program

By James Handforth

The number of people addicted to drugs and alcohol is escalating every day and with them is mounting the number of drug treatment programs. There are more and more services popping up all over to manage with the growing needs for fine rehab programs.

There are different kinds of drug rehab programs and services existing. Of course, the sort of rehabilitation hub you end up going to depends on the sum of money you can spend, the problem you have, and the place where you reside. Also, you can select between inpatient and outpatient treatments at most conveniences.

Private versus public: If you can afford to go to a private rehab facility, then you definitely prefer it over the public one. They provide better accommodations, more time with therapists, and are definitely a step up from public programs. However, some public programs are also very good, and all you need to understand is that they are not a bad option if you are not able to afford private facilities. The private facility will also offer you complete anonymity as many celebrities also use these centres. You will also get access to spas and pools along with massages with luxurious and beautiful settings.

Inpatient rehab is a much more intensive treatment than others, and is definitely the best for addiction. In this, the patient lives with other patients and they usually have extensive discussions on their addictions and factors that led them to addiction. By taking them away from their daily setting, they are forced to put their life on hold and remove all the factors that make them take drugs and take charge of their lives. The minimum period for this is usually thirty days, which is just enough to make the patient go through detoxification and then spend a few weeks in therapy along with other patients.

Longer-term inpatient rehab is, however, more commendable for people who have been addicted for a longer time and have had problem kicking the habit. The long-term program makes it possible for the addict to completely rid themselves of their bad habits and change the way they think about their lives and the drugs they take.

Another type of rehab is day treatment. In this, the patient spends the entire day in therapy. This is usually a part of inpatient treatment, but in this the patient does not have to stay on site and can go home at the end of the day. Usually, these are also of thirty days at minimum and consist of many therapy sessions and meetings. This is most commonly used by people who have children at home and don't want to be away from them for months or longer periods of time.

Outpatient rehab is the least intensive method. In this, the patient attends therapy just a few times every month or every week. The therapy period is also not very long in this. This is best for people who only had a mild addiction and may not harm themselves.

When choosing a drug rehab program, you must think your family and the most excellent for you. Some programs permit families to come in for treatment as well, so that they can also alter their bad habits and dispose of addiction.

Your New Home Espresso Bar - Setting Up Shop

By Kim R.

If you have recently purchased your own home espresso machine, you might be looking for accessories for it. There are some basic "must haves" and there are some really fun add-ons as well. Pick a few from this list to get you off on the right brewing foot.

Priority number one is to get a good coffee grinder. There are two basic types: the blade grinder and the burr grinder. The burr grinder does a better job of grinding the beams to a fine grind. The blade grinders are less expensive and can do a find job when all you need is a course grind for drip coffee. You get what you pay for and a bur grinder is a good upgrade.

The tamper is a pretty simple tool that is used to press down on the coffee grinds prior to brewing. If you have a new espresso machine, a tamper probably came with your machine and it probably sucks too. If you upgrade your tamper make sure it fits will and that it feels and looks good to you.

The next tool type accessories are the frothing and steaming pitchers. Many espresso drinks call for frothed and/or steamed milk. As an example a latte is made with steamed milk. There are many sizes for frothing pitchers but a small one should suite you fine at home.

Espresso Cups and Espresso Cup Sets - This is one of the best places to insert some personality into your espresso bar. There are many types of espresso cups that range from simple porcelain cups to ones with name brand designer patterns. Espresso cups also come in glass and stainless steel. Once you find an espresso cup set that you enjoy for a while, you may just find yourself looking for another set because collecting them is a ton of fun. Your first set of espresso cups don't have to be expensive and you will enjoy using them. If you enjoy larger drinks like lattes and cappuccinos then you will also want to get a set of cappuccinos cups for those drinks.

Along with the espresso cups you will want to add espresso spoons. Just like with espresso cups versus latte cups, there are latte spoons to match to your cups. Some of these spoons can be quite elaborate in their construction while others are plain.

Until you master a multitude of espresso drinks, you will want to have a coffee recipe book. These recipe books can contain hundreds of recipes for coffee beverages (wow!). Basic espresso drinks that you will want to master include the latte, the mocha and the cappuccino.

Once you have the basic espresso drinks mastered you can start adding flavored syrups. There are dozens of flavors and even some that are seasonal (example: pumpkin). You can easily get carried away with too many choices so try them out at your local coffee shop before you buy a multi-year supply in a 750ml bottle.

Actually your options for accessorizing your new espresso machine are nearly endless. Add new items when they make sense to you and you will enjoy brewing your own home made espresso drinks for a long time.

Massage Chairs For Low Back Pain

By Steve Esquire

Do you suffer from low back pain? Pain is a symptom of a musculoskeletal disorder occurring in the lower back. The intensity of the pain felt depends on the extent of the disorder. There are numerous causes such as injury or strains to the lower back. Each case involves issues with the discs, ligaments, soft tissue and muscles in the lower back. Treatments vary depending on the extent and area of damage, but one popular therapy is the use of massage chairs to relieve low back pain.

Most people at one point or another in their life will experience some level of low back pain. It may be caused by certain disorders of the lower back, injury or just plain over usage. Some of these causes can be prevented where others may occur as symptoms from other diseases.

Some common disorders affecting the spine are Pagets disease, Ulcers Scheuermanns disorder, Ankylosing spondylitis, Pancreatitis, Pelvic inflammatory disease and Spinal stenosis. These conditions are best treated by a medical doctor. The treatments for these conditions range from medication to surgery and may involve physical therapy as part of the recovery process.

Many of the causes of low back pain can be prevented. They may result from improper lifting techniques, poor posture when standing or sitting or from injuries. It is always best to warm up your body so the muscles of the back are flexible. Pain associated with these items stem from muscle stiffness.

The common motion causing low back pain that can be prevented is how the body is used. From an anatomical point of view, the weight being put on the spine tends to be concentrated on a few muscles, ligaments and tendons in the lower back. This concentration of force tends to tire out these muscles causing them to become stiff and more brittle. If the force continues to be applied, then these soft tissues can become further fatigued causing them damage.

Massage chairs are being adopted as a natural remedy to help the healing process of the spine and for pain relief. Many medical and chiropractic offices are now equipped with these mechanical wonders. They are used to help restore flexibility and elasticity to the muscle and soft tissue areas by providing a variety of treatments.

A typical treatment that may be given for a patient suffering from low back pain with a massage chair is a rolling massage. The rollers are located in the chair back. The are set to roll up and down the spine with the patient in a fully reclined position. As the rollers move up or down the spine they perform a traction function. Traction stretches the muscles and ligaments to restore elasticity.

Another common task of a massage chair is to provide heat therapy to full body. Special heaters are included throughout the massage chair. Areas that require heat to be applied are selected. The heat is used to reduce swelling and improve blood flow in the targeted area.

One common treatment to help heal the spine is the application of traction. Massage chairs come equipped with 3 traction methods. There are lower body tractions which stretch the legs. There are arm and shoulder tractions which stretch the arms. There are traction for the discs of the spine using the rollers in the chair back.

If you are getting a massage, you might as well relax. Massage chairs incorporate MP3 Players where you can play soft soothing music. Music helps the mind to relax and to let go. This letting go releases the tension in the muscles that the mind is holding. This provides an important environment of relaxation in what may normally be a busy location in offices today.

Low back pain can be particularly agitating because we depend so much on our spine for mobility. Take the precautionary advice here and adapt your lifting techniques and correct your posture. Give your back a fighting chance to avoid injury. Warm up before activities. A massage chair can be used in these pro-active ways as well. You can use the stretching functions and massage treatments to help warm the body up or after to warm down. If you have other stress and tension, then massage chairs are excellent assets to help you care for your back.

Belly Dancing Belts: Show off your shape

By Paul J Eastwood

If you have discovered belly dancing as a hobby you might be excited to go and buy some new accessories. Before you head off to the store you might want to consider what is right for your belly dancing costume.

Usually all you need for your costume is a pair of flowing harem pants or a layered flowing skirt. A bra for a top and you are ready to dance. There are many accessories to choose from to set off your belly dancing costume. Belts are one great way to show off your hips and accessorize your costume.

Belts Made Of Coins

The belts made for belly dancing come made from a variety of materials. The traditional belt is made from coins. The belt is usually strung together from many coins that are designed to look like ancient coins. This unique belt is made to accentuate your hips while you are performing your dance.

There are a variety of coin belt styles to choose from. The most common type is a triangular style that takes the form of a triangle when it is laid out. It is generally longer on one side. This belt style is a very pretty and dramatic accessory for your belly dancing costume.

Another style of the coin belt comes in a circular form. They simply circle the hips. It is great for showing off the hips when the dancer moves them during the dance. Between the emphasis from the style of belt and the sound of the coins jangling the dancers hips will become the focal point of the dance.

The scalloped style is another common belt for belly dancing. They generally are adorned with designs and come in a variety of lengths. This belt can go a long way to glamming up a costume that is very simple in design. If your dances have a lot of hip movements this is the perfect belt for you.

This is just a few of the many designs available in belly dancing belts. There are a great many more to choose from. There are plenty of designs to suit any kind of costume you might have. There are even belly dancing belts that are made of shells as opposed to coins. This makes a striking choice.

Chains make a suitable belt instead of the usual coin belt. They come in silver and gold and the appropriate chain can be found to match your costume. Add some bells for some great sounds while you are performing your dance.

Heat Stroke Targets

By Ian Kleine

The majority of victims that are usually easily affected by heatstroke are the kids and the elderly, as their adaptability to differing temperatures are usually less responsive compared to those in their prime. Those who are severely fat and obese are at also greater risk than those who are slim and fit because the body has a great difficulty dissipating the body heat through the thick layers of lipids and fat.

First aid should be given in haste and should consist of differing methods that should immediately bring the core temperature to at least 39 degrees Celsius. One quick method of doing so is by rubbing the body with a cloth dipped in cold (not ice) water. Alcohol also works fine, as the liquid dissipates into the air fast enough, taking heat away as well; just make sure that you are doing so in a well-ventilated environment.

Should you give a cold bath, do so. But don't do with an ice bath, as the immediate drop in temperature might lead to cardiac arrest. Once temperature has at least reached the 39 degree mark, slowly lead the body to cool down a bit more slowly now. Don't shock the body with an immediate temperature change, never forget this.

A lesser form of heatstroke, or rather a milder version of it, is heat exhaustion. This less severe condition occurs when the afflicted person feels tired, fatigued, and a bit nauseous and dizzy because of profound and long exposure to heat.

This is because of over sweating, which usually brings about excessive loss of body salts, though the body is at a normal or below normal temperature thanks to it. Giving first aid means having small sips of salt water to replenish the lost salts and a massage to areas affected by cramps, which usually follows after heat exhaustion.
