Sleep Apnea Linked to Higher Risk of Sudden Cardiac Death

Sleep apnea increases a patients risk of death by heart attack according to medical research from the Mayo Clinic. CPAP therapy is the prescribed treatment to avoid the risks associated with sleep apnea.

Over 10,000 patients were examined. The researchers found that sleep apnea increased the likelihood of sudden death among patients with heart disease. (As a risk factor, apnea was second only to being over 60 years of age.)

When not treated by CPAP therapy, sleep apnea causes nighttime oxygen levels in the blood to drop. Because the blood has less oxygen, the heart is over-stressed in its attempt to get sufficient oxygen to the brain and other vital body organs.

The research shows that these low oxygen levels results in the blood vessels altering in a way that promotes cardiovascular disease. (Other cardiovascular diseases that apnea is also associated with includes hypertension and stroke " along with the related disease of Alzheimers.)

Simply stated, when the air passage doesnt let enough oxygen into the lungs, the body and brain begin to experience problem due to oxygen-depletion.

This is one of many reasons that the National Apnea Association (NAA) recommends that apnea patients utilize the most widely prescribed form of sleep apnea treatment: CPAP (continuous positive air pressure). Other reasons include increasing energy levels, decreasing depression and even assisting patients in losing weight.

To treat apnea requires regular, nightly use of CPAP equipment. However, wearing a CPAP mask and sleeping next to a CPAP machine is not easy for most people. This is the reason why the national average for compliance with CPAP therapy is only 50%.

The NAA recommends three time-proven strategies to increase your chances of successful CPAP therapy:

Playing Ice Hockey Requires A Lot Of Equipment

Ice hockey is a tremendously fun sport to play but it requires a huge commitment in time and gear to get started. This article will cover all of the basic equipment that you will need to play ice hockey to help you get started.

Start with a good pair of hockey skates. My recommendation is to visit your local hockey shop and try on every pair that they have in your size and pick the ones that are most comfortable. If you end up with skates that don't fit well, you will not enjoy skating in them. To play ice hockey, you need to be decent on your skates. Learn to start, stop, go forward and turn in both directions before trying to actually play hockey. A lot of people use think skates when they use rental skate but this is not what you want when you are performance skating. Thin socks will allow you to feel and control the skates better than a thick sock will.

Hockey isn't hockey without a hockey stick. Ice hockey sticks come in a very large range of choices. Start off with a wood hockey stick and a relatively mild curve on the blade. You don't want a big curve on your blade when you are first starting out because it makes receiving a pass backhanded very difficult and you won't learn the proper shooting techniques. For stick number one it is all about getting a basic model and then growing your skills before choosing your second stick.

Flying pucks hurt if they hit you where you don't have protection. Falling on the ice also hurts when you land on it. This is why the protective hockey gear is so important. You will need a hockey helmet, should pads, elbow pads, hockey pants and shin guards to protect most of your body. Throw in a good pair of hockey gloves and a hockey jill or jock and you will be good to go for protective gear.

Clothing comes next and there are under garments and outer layers to get. The under garments include skate socks, a hockey jock or jill, and an under shirt. Outer clothing include hockey sock that go over then shin guards and a hockey jersey. It is pretty standard to need both a white jersey and a dark jersey so players are easily dividable into teams.

Now we come to a whole host of extra items. These include a hockey bag to hold all of your gear, a special water bottle that you can drink through your mask, shin guard tape (clear and slightly stretchy), hockey stick tape which is cloth tape for your hockey stick blade and for creating a grip on your hockey stick. Don't forget a few hockey pucks!

Once you start to use your hockey gear you will realize that it gets very sweaty and sticky fast. Make sure you air dry your gear after every use and don't be afraid to wash it every once in a while. Other tricks that I have learned include placing dryer sheets in my gloves after use and placing my hockey skates on a boot dryer when I get home from the rink. It is also a good idea to dry the blades of your skates a second time when you get home.

As you can see, there is a large number of items that are required to play ice hockey. Most of these items are for your protection. Don't skip wearing any of them, especially when you are first starting out and playing with other brand new hockey players. The other very important thing to do is to get equipment that fits properly. If you have any doubts ask the folks at your local hockey shop and they will get you set up properly. Good gear will keep you safe and in the game for a long time to come.

Avoiding Childhood Obesity Starts at Home

It's newsworthy how often families nowadays trust the education system to teach their kids all kinds of things other than just reading, writing and arithmetic. Many parents put the obligation for avoiding childhood obesity on the shoulders of the school board as well, believing that gym courses and nutrition had better be a piece of the school's curriculum so that kids can stay fit and healthy. This is a very shortsighted position by parents and one that is a surefire formula for disaster. To combat childhood obesity and to keep youngsters fit and healthy, there must be modifications made in the home first and foremost.

One of the reasons that parents cannot rely on the school systems to take care of this is that many schools just cannot offer gym classes the way they once did. Our schools are normally overcrowded these days so the gymnasium needs to serve as a lunchroom for more hours than ever before. Without regular physical activity, childhood obesity is an almost sure thing. And just instructing a child about calories and fat and nutritional content of food does not mean that he or she is going to avoid junk food and fast food also! Just having the knowledge about these things is not motive sufficient to help a child take the choices needed to avoid childhood obesity.

A parent's example and what happens in the home is definately a better indication of whether or not childhood obesity can be avoided. Children typically take on life style choices and attitudes from their parents whether they're aware of it or not. Parents that are active and that regularly have activities to do will likely raise children that are active and busy as well. Those parents that sit on the couch each evening and on the weekends could find childhood obesity a problem in their own home. This is because children are being taught to be sedentary and inactive. If a parent takes the effort to cook meals that are simple but nourishing a child will learn to value wholesome food and to take the extra time and effort required to prepare such dishes. But when a parent is constantly falling back on drive-through meals and other poor dietary choices, a youngster may learn that such food is acceptable. This also may lead to cases of childhood obesity in the home.

Adults too can set limits with their children while they're with them to help avoid childhood obesity. No one can completely control their child when they're on their own, but serving only nutritious meals and snacks while a child is home will decrease any damage they may be doing by eating junk at every other time! Many cases of childhood obesity are also associated to inaction during the day and evening. With this in mind parents can plan times to go to a zoo, aquarium, or other places where everybody walks around. They can also help stave off childhood obesity by biking, walking, playing catch, playing Frisbee, setting up a badminton net, or other activities that involve all the family members.

As a parent, you must take responsibility for the health of your child. This includes making sure that he/she gets proper nutrition along with adequate exercise. Without this, they may become oe of the many kids that are falling thru the cracks into obesity.

What are you willing to do in order to build muscle?

I thought of an interesting question today as I was reviewing my goals for the next year. You see, as the year draws to an end, I decided that I would become more serious about setting goals and keeping myself on track. As I began picking the list of what I want to accomplish next year, I started to think about what each of these goals would cost in both time and effort.

I've learned to ask myself an important, albeit a difficult, question. Am I willing to do whatever it takes to achieve these goals?

If you're going to be writing a list of goals in the near future and building muscle will be on the list of things you want to accomplish, take a moment to ask yourself the same questions. You see, achievements such as building a strong, muscular body do not simply happen by themselves. They take dedication, commitment, and the initiative to take action.

You may think that you've heard all this before, and maybe that's true. But hearing something a number of times and actually putting it into practice are two completely different things. Without action, that knowledge is worthless.

Whatever you choose to do in your life will be at the expense of something else. You can really only do one thing at any particular moment, so you should know what you're willing to give up.

So are you willing to do what it takes to reach your fitness goals? Which do you prefer, watching that favor TV show or working on a solid strength training program? Can you give up the incredibly tempting ice cream sundaes you eat every day in exchange for a healthier and better looking body?

You may not have to give up every fun thing in your life in order to reach some serious goals, but some sacrifice will inevitably be involved.

A half hour workout a few times a week for several months will accomplish what one five hour workout cannot. Whatever you choose, keep the long term in mind and rest assured that living your dreams tomorrow, in both bodybuilding and beyond, are well worth the price you pay today.

Experts say it's more effective to eat small portions whenever we get the munchies rather than stuffing ourselves every meal. Doing this can also keep our metabolism high and lets us burn calories more efficiently. It's been discovered that our metabolic rate slows down considerably when our body senses a shortage of food.

Having healthy eating habits and sticking to regular fat-burning exercises (cardio and strength training) will help speed-up fat loss and keep metabolism high. Raising the body's metabolic rate means less calories transformed to fat.

Are All Anti Aging Wrinkle Creams Created Equal?

To really understand if all anti aging wrinkle creams are created equal, it is helpful to look at some causes of facial wrinkles and what ingredients are effective in combating these causes. It also helps to know what ingredients to stay away from.

We've all heard it said that the eyes are the windows to the soul, but as the largest organ of the body, it is the skin that acts as the protective wall between our environment and our inner physiological workings. The skin is acting continually to absorb nutrients and eliminate toxins. Unfortunately, it can also absorb toxins, such as chlorine in water, for example. The skin is remarkable permeable and can be adversely impacted by many chemical substances, especially solvents. But, with the right ingredients, anti aging creams use this quality of our skin to a positive, healthful end.

Proper blood flow in the microcapillaries of our skin is vital to maintaining a youthful complexion. As we age, our circulation decreases, causing a decrease in cellular energy and a breakdown of the two proteins most responsible for our skins health, collagen and elastin.

D3PA is also known as the universal antioxidant. What makes it so unique, or 'universal', is the fact that it actually boosts the levels of other antioxidants in our bodies, such as Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Gluthaione. This property of D3PA makes it a major tool in combating the broadest range of free radicals that attack our cells. Of all the antioxidants, D3PA is the most important one to help cure wrinkles.

Many anti wrinkle skin care products contain ingredients that actually irritate the skin and cause further damage. Ingredients such as peppermint, menthol, camphor, and lemon to name a few. These are inflammatory in nature.

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Typical Mexican Meals

Mexican cuisine is known for its colorful presentation and healthy qualities. Home to the Aztecs, Mayans and Zapotecs, Mexico developed a strong agricultural civilization early. They grew many foods like avocados, peppers, beans, corn, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, and squash. They hunted for deer, turkey, rabbit, and quail. Chocolate is grown in Mexico, and was originally served as a drink to Aztec royalty.

When the Spanish arrived in Mexico, they brought their favorite foods with them. Pork, beef, cheese, and cream were added and combined with the native foods. The Spanish brought sheep, chickens, wheat, and sugar. Three hundred years later when Spain finally gave up control of Mexico, their influence on Mexican food was well established.

Corn is a major part of Mexican meals. Cornmeal, known as masa, is made into a dough that can be formed into tortillas, empanadas, or tamales. Corn is also added to soups, stews, and other dishes. Tortillas made of flour are more common in northern Mexico. Chili peppers are also a main part of the Mexican diet. Jalapenos, poblano, and Serrano chilies are just a few of the common choices in the Mexican household.

Another food source that is used daily in Mexico is beans. Different regions of Mexico have their own favorite beans, such as the black beans that are favored in the Yucatan. Beans are used to make frijoles, or refried beans or filling for tacos, burritos, and other favorites.

Beans are not the only food that is regional. In the hot, dry north, beef is eaten a lot because there is plenty of room for grazing. The Pacific coast offers excellent coffee and corn stew. On the Gulf coast, tropical fruits and vegetables are served with fish and seafood. The Spanish influence is very strong in Central Mexico, as this is where they settled. On the Yucatan Peninsula, seafood, eggs, black beans and corn are common food items.

If you want to try making a typical Mexican meal at home, there are many easy recipes to try out. Authentic Mexican rice recipes can set the tone for your entire meal. Rice is frequently used in Mexico as a side dish or as filling. Once you have tried a recipe or two at home, you will see how delicious authentic Mexican food can be.

Try something new and experiment. Adding a different bean can change the texture or flavor to a dish. Add tortillas or refried beans as a side dish, or throw together some fresh seafood and citrus juice to make a cooling ceviche on a hot day. Mexican food is great for kids to make, too. Let them make their own quesadillas or tacos.

For something new, try a Mexican breakfast. In the summer, a simple bowl of mixed tropical fruit is an authentic choice. On a colder day, try some scrambled eggs mixed with salsa. Fill a tortilla with a fried egg, tomatoes, ham, chilies, and cheese and serve it up with some refried beans for a taste you will find exciting.

Is My Headache a Migraine or Not?

It's the very rare person who has never had a headache. However, all headaches are not created equally. There are various forms and one of the most painful and difficult to handle is the migraine headache.

Migraines are classified as throbbing headaches that are felt on only one side of the head. Most migraine sufferers experience some degree of nausea and even vomiting. They are also sensitive to light and sound and the pain becomes worse with activity.

A person that suffers from 'classical' migraines will have what is called an 'aura' prior to the actual headache. They will experience sensory disturbances that could include brightly colored blinking lines, flashes of light, dots and black spots that pass in their field of vision. They might also lose a portion of their sight for this short period of time and may only see half of an object. The aura comes about 10 - 30 minutes before the headache and only 10% - 15% of migraineurs have this type of a migraine.

The other 85 to 90 percent will experience a common migraine (or migraine without aura). These people can still have warning signs though, which include a hot sensation in the head, a feeling of heaviness and a tightening sensation throughout the scalp. These warnings can actually appear from a few hours to even a day before the attack.

Learning to read your own body warnings and symptoms can be a very important part of developing an effective treatment program for your headaches. It's a good idea to keep a little symptom diary so that you can identify any patterns that might emerge. For instance, you might find that the migraine comes on around the same time every month. If that's the case, and you are a woman, it could be tied in with your monthly cycle.

Some people only experience the headache for 4 hours or so, but other will have the migraine for up to seventy-two hours. It mostly starts with a dull, aching pain, developing into an overwhelming throbbing pain, which can fluctuate. For those who are sensitive to light during this phase, they have to lie down in a darkened room and keep as still as possible. Bending over or sudden movements can increase the pain. Diarrhea, increased urination and loss of appetite are other changes that can occur.

While the headache is at its worse, the hands and feet can feel extremely cold. However, just before the migraine the head might have felt hot. All these temperature changes are thought to be due to disturbances taking place in the hypothalamus, which is the bodys thermostat.

Migraines can occur after a period of intense stress has actually ended. For instance, after getting back from a vacation, a weekend or shortly after meeting a deadline. Also, when the migraine is all over, it is not unusual for the person to feel completely wiped out. Some report actually feeling exhausted for days after. Some, however, feel a sense of renewal and a surge of energy.

Chemicals haven't rang a trustworthy sound to it in recent years that people developed an aversion to anything or something with chemicals. There are numerous uses and benefits of exercising. They can make you look fresh and fit, give you that solid health, and yes, help get rid of those stretch marks. If you have firm skin through exercise, it is less likely that you develop stretch marks, thus, naturally preventing the need for stretch marks treatment. Being properly hydrated can work wonders for your skin, too.

The appearance of stretch marks can also be caused by improper nutrition. Not getting enough nutrients needed by the body can make skin weaker and more prone to damage of the underlying tissue causing stretch marks. Moreover, malnutrition leads to being easily fatigued and having poor concentration.

The lack of elasticity of the skin aggravates the stretch marks situation. Drinking caffeinated drinks contributes to the weakening of the skin making it lose elasticity and becoming prone to stretch marks. Avoid drinking coffee and most teas; do the same for softdrink and colas.

You should look into your eating and drinking habits. If you are serious about taking on the fight against your stretch marks, you have to start with what you put into your body. If you watch that, you can also manage what your body turns into.

Cocoa butter is also good in reducing visibility of stretch marks. It is good for the overall health of your skin making it glow and supple. Olive oil, Vitamin E oil and cod liver oil are good options, too.

Scientifically-conjured products and methods do not all work wonders for us. Most of the time, how we choose the products and methods are dictated by how our body reacts to them in order to find the most effective way possible. The same products and treatments can have varying effects on each of our bodies. Our bodies can react differently to the chemical involved or used in the various products and treatments. It is best to evaluate them based on our bodies reactions.

Making informed judgment is the best way to choose the best treatment and prevention methods that will work for you. Fortunately, there are a lot of available options to naturally remove stretch marks.

Treating sinusitishow?

Treating sinusitis shouldnt have too be complicated as there are many methods to cure sinusitis and some of which are not that hard to do. But it depends on how you got sinusitis first. If you got it from a virus then you should use pain relievers, decongestants or nasal sprays. If you got it from a bacteris you should take pain relievers, antibiotics or decongestants.

If you prefer the natural way you may try aromatherapy. This is a natural way and relaxing way to clear up your sinuses. You can add in some oils or put in your favorite oils during aromatherapy. Lavender, menthol, and other essential oils for this.

You can ask your local organic pharmacy for sea salt water nasal sprays if you dont want the medicated nasal sprays. Placing a humidifier is also an option as well. Sometimes if an area is too dry some dusts or irritants might get into your sinuses and this causes the swelling.

Symptoms of sinusitis can vary. It can be pain on your face or runny nose. Post nasal drip is also a common indication too. Most often than not headaches are also common. Fever, stuffy nose, tooth pain and other problems to your nose and throat then you may have sinusitis.

Dont fret. As mentioned earlier there are many methods to treat sinusitis or any Sinusitis Trouble that you may be experiencing.

If you dont want to get sinusitis just live a healthy lifestyle. In any sickness, the best cure is prevention and that same applies to sinusitis. Eat healthy foods like vegetables and fish or chicken. A good amount of protein and carbohydrates should be part of your diet too. Exercise regularly. Stay away from smokes and other air pollutants as this may cause your sinuses to swell up.

Fast Abs Workout - Using Unstable Surfaces

As more and more cultures are discovering the wonders and calories of fast-food from the west, the number of obesity cases is also fast increasing. In North American and metropolitan cities in Europe, an overwhelming majority of the populations are becoming overweight.

That said, more and more people are joining the fight against the flab and a large number don't know the first thing about exercising to get fast abs. A lot of folks go about their workouts thinking rep after rep of sit-ups, leg raises and crunches are what a fast abs workout is all about.

In reality, flat floor sit-ups and other conventional ab isolating exercises are quite unbalanced when it comes to strengthening the core muscles. Working-out all the core muscles (made-up of the upper and lower abs, obliques and the lumbar muscles) is the only real way to work out the abs effectively.

Having strong core muscles is like having a strong foundation. It enables the rest of the body to move fluidly with less effort and avoid injury. Core muscle exercises also mimic the natural movements our bodies move in our daily activities.

Our spine has a natural curve to it and doing ab exercises flat on the floor or on a bench clearly limits our torsos range of motion when we're doing crunches or sit-ups. Using a soft, curved medium like an exercise ball enables more muscle movement, resulting in more physical effort and more calories burned.

A test using electromyography was done to determine the difference between normal flat-bench crunches and sit-ups to ones done on a curved surface. The results were clear- a way higher percentage of muscle fibers of the midsection were being utilized in core exercises on a curved, unstable surface.

Doing abdominal exercises on an unstable surface also makes your workouts more efficient because more muscular effort is done trying to balance your body. Other muscles of the core, like the transverse abdominis is used to provide stability- resulting in more calories burned and a faster ab workout.

Employing the use of unstable surfaces also makes exercising more less boring. The more fun workout sessions are, the easier it is for people to stick to them and eventually get the results they want in less time.

Treatment for Hyperhidrosis: What You Need to Know

Sweat. Normally it's a good sign of how much effort you're exerting or how your body feels about the weather. Like many other things, some people have more of it than others. That's normal, too. What isn't normal is having far too much coming out.

That's what people call Hyperhidrosis, or the condition or state that a person just sweats far too much than is healthy or normal. Botulinum toxin is a common solution that can be used to treat underarms sweating. This solution disables the sweat glands, but only temporarily. This is an FDA-approved solution with effects that can last only from 4 to 9 months.

A mistaken cure for hyperhidrosis involves the use anxiolytics and antidepressants. This was in a effort to control anxiety as people easily connect sweating to that condition or emotion. Beta blockers, as they are sometimes used to control the symptoms of stress, are also used, though this application for these items are no longer considered.

Hyperhidrosis can interfere with a lot of activities, especially if a person is suffering them on their hands. Grasping or catching or throwing objects becomes extra difficult, if not thoroughly impossible. It could even be socially awkward or damaging, which has lead to the search for a cure for hyperhidrosis.

Surgical options for curing hyperhidrosis can be expensive. But if your lifestyle and career is dependent on its treatment, shelling out the money should not be too much of a concern. It could be well worth it if it means living free of the social stigma that hyperhidrosis can bring.
